Sigtuna & Uppsala – Viking Heritage
Week 1 – Stockholm & Surrounding Areas
The 1st week of your tour will be spent in Stockholm and the surrounding areas, with you gradually heading north as the week draws to a close.
For your 1st day, take a scenic drive to the shoreline of Lake Mälaren for a guided tour of the UNESCO-listed Drottningholm Palace. In the afternoon, visit Grispholm Castle, a Renaissance fortress and the home of part of the Swedish National Portrait Collection. Enjoy an evening in a lakeside hotel by the stunning Lake Mariefred.
On days 2 and 3, you’ll visit the best attractions in Stockholm. Walk through the enchanting Gamla Stan (old town), enjoy a guided tour of the Royal Palace, and take a trip to the tranquil island of Djurgården, where you’ll visit Vasa, Skansen, and ABBA museums.
Day 4 begins in the university city of Uppsala, where you’ll start at Uppsala Cathedral, the tallest church in Scandinavia and the burial site for King Gustav Vasa. Finish at Gustavianum, the university’s oldest building, before departing for Sweden’s oldest town, Sigtuna. Explore the old town and see the ancient Rune stones carved with messages from Viking times, commemorating people who died and battles they fought in. Finish your day with a scenic drive through the countryside back to Stockholm.
Day 5 is your final day in Stockholm, and you will enjoy a luxury cruise on the Stockholm Archipelago. Explore one of the most stunning coastal landscapes in the world, where you can swim in the Baltic Sea, enjoy lunch on a charming island, and embark on a hike through lush forests.
On Day 6, your journey north begins as you drive along the scenic E4 highway en route to Gävle. Explore the harbor city, visit the Swedish Railway Museum, and grab lunch in the city’s old town before your journey north continues. Arrive in Sundsvall in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day exploring the 19th-century city, visiting the Esplanaden Boulevard, Kulturmagasinet Museum Complex, or a coffee by the Selångersån River.
Finish the week by driving along the High Coast Route, where you’ll enjoy UNESCO landscapes and coastal cliffs. Take a quick pit stop at Högakustenbron, one of Europe’s longest suspension bridges and an excellent stop for panoramic photos. Arrive at Skuleskogen National Park and hike to Slåttdalsskrevan, a striking crack in the red granite cliffs. It’s like someone sliced the mountain open with a giant knife, and you can walk through this crack of the red granite mountain. There’s quite a lot of walking involved so if you are uncomfortable, you driver guide can show you a more leisurely hike instead. Finish the day admiring geology exhibits at Naturum Höga Kusten before arriving at your accommodation in Docksta.
Week 2 – Swedish Lapland
On Day 8, you’ll begin the scenic drive inland to Swedish Lapland with your driver guide. Visit Umeå, a university city renowned for its leafy boulevards. Your guide will take you to Bildmuseet, one of Sweden’s leading contemporary art museums, before you enjoy a traditional Swedish lunch in the city center. After lunch, continue the drive with a final stop at the Nordanå Cultural Park, where you can visit museums, historic buildings, and art galleries. Continue the drive towards Lapland and spend the night in Arvidsjaur, a peaceful town surrounded by lakes and forests.
Depart Arvidsjaur on your 9th day and stop at Vuollerim, a small village where you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Vuollerim 6000 museum, learning about Sweden’s oldest settlements. Enjoy Swedish fika before journeying to the historic town of Jokkmokk, a center for Sami trade. Visit the Ájtte Museum to learn about traditional Sami life and browse for Sami handicrafts.
On day 10, you’ll officially cross the Arctic Circle, meaning you have arrived in Swedish Lapland! You’ll get some great photo opportunities at road signs and monuments at Arctic Circle crossing points. You’ll stop in the riverside village of Porjus and the mining town of Gällivare on your way to Kiruna, Sweden’s most northerly town, where you’ll stay for 3 nights. Head to the world-famous Icehotel, built from ice and snow, where you can tour the ice art suites, chapels, and ice bar! Feed reindeer at the Sámi Siida & Reindeer Experience, and visit Abisko National Park, known for scenic hiking routes and its views of the Northern Lights in winter.
Depart Kiruna en route to Luleå, your base for days 13 and 14 of your private tour. The drive to Luleå is a treat in itself, passing pine forests and traditional Swedish villages along the northern coast. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gammelstad Church Town and relax at Norra Hamn, the northern harbor district.
Week 3 – From North to South Sweden
On day 15, your journey south begins on the E4 coastal highway, stopping at Skellefteå to visit Sara Kulturhus – one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world, and a peaceful walk along the Skellefte River. You’ll return to the university city of Umeå, where you can relax for the evening before exploring the city the following day, taking a break from driving.
On day 17, you leave Umeå for the last time, with your first stop being the “gateway to the High Coast” Örnsköldsvik. After a coffee on the harbor promenade, your driver guide will take you to Skuleberge. Your guide will lead you on a leisurely hike up the dramatic mountain with coastal views. Arrive in Sundsvall and visit the Kulturmagasinet Museum before enjoying a traditional Swedish dinner and live music at a local bar.
You’ll continue south on your 18th day, with a return to Gävle Old Town. Explore the cobbled streets with your driver guide, and explore any attractions that you missed on day 6. Arrive in the city of Västerås on the shores of Lake Mälaren, where you’ll have several restaurants with stunning lakeside views to choose from, before spending the night here.
On days 19 and 20, you’ll stay in Kalmar, with some notable attractions on the journey from Västerås. Visit Linköping Cathedral, one of Sweden’s finest Gothic churches, and the open-air Gamla Linköping museum. You’ll spend day 19 on Öland Island, visiting Borgholm Castle, Solliden Palace, and the UNESCO-listed Stora Alvaret.
Start day 21 with a trip to Kosta Boda Glassworks, where you learn about the glassblowing process and tour glass exhibitions. Visit boutique glass sculpture studios in Boda and then drive through deep forests and scenic lakes to arrive in Växjö. Explore Växjö Cathedral and Teleborg Castle before you unwind at your accommodation for the evening.
Week 4 – West Coast & Return to Stockholm
For your final week, you will gradually begin to make your way back to Stockholm. On the 22nd day of your tour, enjoy a coastal drive through Österlen, known for rolling hills and charming villages. Stop in the fishing town of Simrishamn, where you will explore the colorful town and enjoy lunch at one of the town’s renowned seafood restaurants. Arrive in Ystad in the evening, where you can explore the medieval town before checking into your hotel.
Spend the morning of day 23 exploring Ystad before your driver guide takes you to Trelleborg. Visit Trelleborgen and marvel at the reconstructed Viking ring fortress. Spend the evening in Malmö, exploring the old town, visiting the famous Turning Torso, and enjoying a traditional Nordic meal.
On day 24, your first stop is the charming town of Lund. Visit Lund Cathedral and the open-air museum “Kulturen,” where you’ll learn about Swedish life through the centuries. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Skåne countryside before arriving in Helsingborg, a historic coastal city. Visit the Sofiero Palace & Gardens, climb the Kärnan medieval tower, and see views of Denmark from the Öresund Strait.
Depart Helsingborg on day 25 with your first stop at Kullaberg Nature Reserve, where you will see stunning views of dramatic cliffs, caves, and the sea. Stop at Halmstad, a beachy town where you can visit Möllegårds Nature Reserve, walk along Tylösand Beach, and enjoy lunch or fika. Continue to Varberg, where you can explore Varberg Fortress on the coast, before visiting the Cold Bath House. Arrive in Gothenburg and spend the evening exploring Sweden’s 2nd biggest city.
On day 26, it’s time to take to the sea as you explore the Gothenburg Archipelago. Hop from island to island as you visit Styrsö, Brännö, and Vrångö, where you can go on scenic hikes, relax on sandy beaches, and have a lunch to remember with a peaceful island setting. You’ll return to the mainland in the late afternoon with enough time to explore Gothenburg for the rest of the day.
For the penultimate day of your tour, embark on a day trip to Marstrand, a beloved summer vacation spot in Sweden. Take a short passenger ferry and visit Carsltens Fortress, a 17th-century castle with breathtaking coastal views. Walk around the island leisurely and visit art galleries, boutiques, and cafes. When you return to Gothenburg, tick off anything left on your bucket list on the final night of your tour.
On your final day, the tour will be tailored depending on whether you have a flight to catch and what time you want the tour to finish. Your driver guide will take you on a scenic drive back to Stockholm, with notable stops along the way. You’ll first stop for fika in Jönköping, where you can stretch your legs and admire the views of Lake Vättern. Visit Gränna, a charming town known for inventing polkagrisar (Swedish candy sticks). Your private guide will take you to a candy workshop so you can see how they are hand-rolled and even try some freshly made candy. You’ll arrive in Stockholm in the early evening, where your guide can drop you off at the airport or a chosen destination.
